Collection Sorting
Collection sorting (collection merchandising) is the core function of Dynasort. Instead of relying on Shopify’s default sorting options, Dynasort lets you automate and customize rankings using Recipes, Boost, and Pinning.
How Collection Sorting Works
Section titled “How Collection Sorting Works”- Dynasort syncs collection data from Shopify.
- Products are ranked based on weighted Attributes in a Recipe.
- Boost adjustments add additional ranking points across all collections.
- Pinning locks specific products to fixed positions within a collection.
- The optimized order is pushed to Shopify.
- Sorting refreshes every 10–60 minutes, depending on your plan.
Recipes: The Foundation of Collection Sorting
Section titled “Recipes: The Foundation of Collection Sorting”Recipes define how products are ranked. You select Attributes (e.g. Best Sellers, Inventory Levels, Price) and assign weights.
Example:
- “Best Sellers” weight: 30 points
- “Price over $100” weight: 20 points
- “New Arrivals” weight: 10 points
Each product’s total score determines its ranking.
Boost: Enhancing Product Visibility
Section titled “Boost: Enhancing Product Visibility”Boost is a product-specific ranking adjustment that applies across all collections.
When to use Boost:
- Highlighting high-margin or promotional products
- Pushing seasonal products across multiple collections
- Keeping flagship items visible storewide
Pinning: Locking Product Positions
Section titled “Pinning: Locking Product Positions”Pinning is collection-specific and fixes products to a certain position. Other products adjust around pinned items when Dynasort updates rankings.
When to use Pinning:
- Keeping key products in specific spots
- Ensuring brand/category balance
- Preserving manual merchandising decisions alongside automation
Collection Sorting vs. Managed Collections
Section titled “Collection Sorting vs. Managed Collections”Collection Sorting ranks products already in Shopify collections. Managed Collections can also choose which products belong in a collection based on conditions.
Frequently asked questions
How does Dynasort collection sorting work?
Dynasort syncs the collection from Shopify, scores each product with the weighted attributes in the assigned recipe, applies any Boost points and pinned positions, and pushes the resulting order to Shopify. The cycle repeats every 10 to 60 minutes depending on plan.
What is the difference between Boost and Pinning?
Boost adds ranking points to a product in every collection it appears in, and the value can be negative to demote it store-wide. Pinning locks a product to a fixed position in one specific collection while Dynasort ranks everything else around it.
Does Dynasort replace Shopify's default collection sorting?
Yes, while a collection is enabled. Dynasort writes its ranked order to Shopify so shoppers see it on the storefront. Disable the collection and it reverts to the sort order you chose, such as Best selling.
What is the difference between Collection Sorting and Managed Collections?
Collection Sorting ranks the products already in a Shopify collection. Managed Collections also decide which products belong in the collection, using conditions such as price, tags, stock or sales, and can then rank them with a recipe.
Can a collection use more than one recipe?
One recipe is applied at a time. To compare two recipes on the same collection, run an A/B test. To alternate between recipes and Shopify sort orders on a schedule, use Sort Rotation.
Do I need to edit my theme for collection sorting?
No. Dynasort applies the order through Shopify's own APIs, so there are no theme changes and no storefront scripts for collection sorting.
